Anesthesia and Surgery

Many procedures in veterinary medicine require general anesthesia.  While there are always risks involved with anesthesia, we do everything we can to anticipate and reduce these risks.  Pre-anesthetic blood-work offers us a picture of an animal’s organ function and therefore allows us to assess the body’s ability to metabolize anesthetic drugs.  Placing an intravenous (IV) catheter allows us fast access for the delivery of emergency drugs.  An IV catheter also acts as a port for the continuous delivery of IV fluids that fortify the anesthetized animal’s cardiovascular system.  Most importantly, a trained assistant continuously monitors every anesthetized animal until they are fully recovered.   Each surgery is skillfully performed by one of our veterinarians.  We make it a priority to call owners as soon as the surgery is completed and the animal is recovered and alert.

We are now offering PennHip radiographs  (X-rays) for early diagnosis of canine hip dysplasia. Dogs as young as 4 months of age can be screened, and when needed, early interventions can be instituted to lessen the effects of degenerative joint disease (arthritis) that results from having dysplastic hips. This is also an important hip screening test for potential breeding animals.  Call us for more information or to schedule your dog's screening.
